Visual Culture: Afghan War Rugs

February 3rd, 2009

My wife and I had collected Baluch prayer rugs before the war started. These are tribal rugs that tend to be no more than 3′ x 5′.

The tribes along the Iran and Pakistan borders are also known for their war rugs, first against the Russians and now about the USA. Here are just a few samples.

These rugs are of, Tanks, the Soviet Exodus, and F16s.

Something is happening over at www.warrug.com. The sensitivity of the use of these objects, in the context of the recent tragedies, and Afghanistan’s entangled destiny with the U.S. has created an awkward kind of self-conscious business. One that reflects a bit of my own awkwardness as some one who identifies with, admires and internalizes fragments of their culture.
